Frequently Asked Questions

How much do you charge for a session?

My standard rate for a one-hour counselling session is £40.00.

I do offer a concessional rate of £35.00 per hour for students and those who are not working.

I also offer a limited number of online sessions for students at £20.00 per hour.

What if I can't afford counselling?

I can offer concessions for people on a low income or struggling to make ends meet. If this is something you are concerned about, please get in touch. I also offer a reduced rate for online counselling sessions for students.

How accessible is the counselling room?

You will not need to use any stairs to access the counselling room as it is on the ground floor. The room is close to the entrance of the building; however, there is a short but narrow corridor leading to the room that could be an issue for some wheelchair users. Toilet facilities are on-site next door to the counselling room. There is no parking on-site; however, Morrisons free car park is a 3-minute walk away. There is on-street parking outside the building on Ticklemoor Street for Blue Badge holders.

What type of counselling do you offer?

I offer Person-Centred Counselling focusing on you as a unique person.

What will happen once I make an enquiry?

Following your enquiry, I will contact you to introduce myself and to have a brief discussion with you as to how I might be able to support you. If you filled out the contact form, I will contact you via your preferred method. Sometimes people will go ahead and book an initial session during this first contact whereas others like to take some time to think about it. If you do decide to book an initial session, I will email you a few documents including the following forms,

  • A Privacy Statementoutlining how your information is stored
  • A Counselling agreementoutlining confidentiality and the service I offer
  • Payment Details form
  • Contact Details form

How many sessions will I need?

Everyones path is different, so the number of sessions varies for each person. Im here to support you and your needs every step of the way. Youre never pressured to continue after your first session. If booking your sessions each week suits you let’s do that, if you’d prefer booking blocks of sessions, we can do that too. I am always happy to check in with you and discuss how you would like to progress. Whether you prefer short or longterm counselling, its all about what feels best for you.

What if I already know you?

A big part of why counselling supports people is because of what is called the therapeutic relationship. For us to have the best chance of developing a good therapeutic relationship it’s important that we do not know each other outside of the counselling relationship.

How Do I know You are a Qualified Counsellor?

Being a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) is like having a stamp of approval in the counselling world. It means you’ve met their high standards for training, ethical practice, and ongoing professional development.

I am a registered member of the BACP, having completed an Advanced Counselling Diploma with Heartwood College.

I am committed to good ethical practice, adhering to the BACP’s ethical guidelines, having appropriate supervision for my caseload and continually striving to improve my understanding of counselling theory and practice.

Are the sessions confidential?

Everything you share with me stays between me and you and doesn’t leave the counselling room. There are a few limited exceptions to this standard which we can discuss further during our first meeting.

What Will the First Session Be Like?

The first session is an opportunity for us to get to know each other a little better. I may ask some questions to better understand what has brought you for counselling and what you are hoping to get from counselling. There is no expectation for you to share anything you don’t feel comfortable talking about. The first session is also an opportunity for you to get a feel for how I work and ask any questions you may have.

In the first session we will also discuss some aspects of the documents I emailed you which should only take about 10 or so minutes.

What if I can't make a session?

If you can’t make a session and give me at least 24 hours notice there will be no charge and when possible I will try and book you into the next available slot for that week, otherwise we will meet for our next scheduled appointment. If less than 24 hours notice is given I will ask you to cover the cost for the room rental. If sessions are cancelled with short notice on a regular basis, I may ask that the price of the full session be covered.

Do you offer online counselling?

I do offer a limited number of online counselling sessions. Please get in touch if this is something you are looking for.

Do you offer walk and talk counselling?

I do offer walk and talk counselling in the Totnes area. The cost is the same as my standard rate.

While these are some common questions people ask, please do get in touch if you have any other questions not listed here.
